An elderly man in a hurry to get to a hospital to visit his wife sits down at a German bus stop located in front of his house. While sitting there a young girl, then a young woman begin asking him questions that make him wonder what he is doing there.

These Shining Lives

Directed by Richard

Based on the true story of four women who worked in a watch factory in Ottawa, Illinois, the play dramatizes the danger women faced in the workforce in the 1920s, and the lack of concern by companies for protecting the health of its employees. Narrated by one of the workers, Catherine Donohue, These Shining Lives shows women getting a chance for a well-paying job in the 1920s and early 1930s, which was uncharacteristic for the time in the United States.

Sunset Baby

A legendary Black Panther, who gave up his family in the name of “The Revolution”, tries to come to terms with a daughter who grew up without him and has nothing but contempt for his “cause”, forcing them both to re-evaluate concepts of personal, family, and social values.

Upcoming Productions

These are scenes from my adaptation of David Hare’s Knuckle, which were filmed for the Edward Lewis Festival in February.  We’re doing a full production of this play in September.

Richard Scharine is an emeritus professor of the University of Utah Theatre Department.  A co-founder of People Productions, an African-American themed theatre, he has directed around 100 plays and acted in a hundred more, including in seven foreign countries.

Tale of Tears

“Tale of Tears” is a virtual story from the book, “The Past We Step Into,” written by Richard Scharine, and published by Atmosphere Press in 2021. Narrated by the author, complete with photograph illustrations and a musical introduction and summary by Paul Boruff, “Tale of Tears” is filmed and edited by Nan Weber.
